MHI Completes Second Round of Total Cost of Care Project | 10.28.16

For the past three years, a national effort to measure total cost of care for patients has been one way MHI has used its claims data asset and diverse stakeholder partnerships to gain a deeper understanding of health care cost and utilization in our region. The goal is to foster an ongoing, honest dialogue about how our region might work together to lower costs, improve the appropriate use of resources and position itself as a national leader in health care quality and affordability.

The project, funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and led by the Network for Regional Healthcare Improvement, brings together regions from across the nation to work collaboratively to measure cost and resource in a consistent way using measures developed by HealthPartners of MN and endorsed by the National Quality Forum. Soon, the project will release a report on these national comparisons.

Recently as an update to 2013 data received last Fall, MHI provided a brief snapshot to local primary care medical groups showing comparisons of the average 2014 total cost of care for their patients compared to regional benchmarks.

MHI looks forward to continuing this work with a 2015 report and three-year trend comparisons in early 2017.
